To call an argument ideological is not to describe it but to discredit it, while the accuser speaks for objectivity and common sense. Yet an arrangement that looks natural and without alternative is the mark of hegemony, not neutrality. The only question is whether you know which one you speak from.

Ideological conflict has hardened over the past fifteen years: the radical right has taken power in many countries, party systems have fractured, the climate crisis has become a front line. This book examines eleven traditions within a shared architecture. Each chapter identifies the core concept of an ideology, then follows the same path: diagnosis of the existing order, vision of the good society, strategy of transition, values and symbols, historical trajectory.

Its method is set out rather than left between the lines. Ideologies are treated as arrangements of political concepts, and the material conditions that produce and transform them are traced through the materialist conception of history. Readers will not close the book holding a catalogue of correct positions, but a way of thinking about political ideologies that works beyond these pages.
